While some are out enjoying the sweet deals of Black Friday, plumbers are working on the busiest day of their year. In fact, the day after Thanksgiving, plumbers see a 50 percent increase in their business due to Thanksgiving feast related clogs and blockages. Even if you love your plumber, you likely don’t want to spend your Black Friday with them. Keep reading for tips on how to prevent drain clogging after your turkey feast.
- Don’t put fats, grease or oils down the drain: grease and fat might go down the drain easily when it is warm, but as it cools, it congeals and turns into a slimy solid. The cooled grease, fats, and oil will stick to the walls of your pipes and make it much easier for food particles to stick to the pipe walls creating blockages.
- Don’t use the toilet to flush food waste: It may seem like a good idea to flush food waste down the toilet, but it is not. Yes, food waste entering through your kitchen sink ends up going to the same place as food waste entering through your toilet, but the food waste coming through the kitchen sink must pass through the garbage disposal unit and be broken up into tiny little bits before going into your sewage line. If you dump food down the toilet, it is likely the food particles will be too big and end up clogging the drain. Human waste and toilet paper will dissolve over time in water, large food pieces and turkey carcasses will not.
- Don’t put celery, potato peels, or other fibrous food down the drain: These types of food can tangle in your garbage disposal unit causing it to jam or the motor to blow out. Let your guests know not to put these items in the sink if you plan to have anyone else help you prepare the feast.
